Types of Samadhi & Ecstasy— modes of realising the reality of Silent Truth
Exploration of Nirvikalpa/Savikalpa Samadhi vs Ecstasy (& altered states/high intensity states of consciousness) in the Vedic & perennial/timeless/primordial/magical traditions.
The reality of silent truth exists both with & without rising appearances. Appearances are the contents of consciousness perceived with the senses. Awareness of the reality of silent truth (with or without appearances) is samadhi or ecstasy.
Ecstasy is not as we think, mere indulgent revelry in the senses, but quite the opposite. From the Greek ekstasis, it is the state of consciousness of going beyond the ordinary waking state of the five senses (& the five elements).
To go beyond the waking state, is to stand as the witness of appearances; or the knower.
At the North-Eastern corner on the cardinal map or at the Mid-Winter turn on the wheel of the year we encounter dead silence (or the silent blue night)— a space without any appearances; deep in the midst of winter.
Here we sink into the underworld, where we meet with the God/Goddess of death.
The previous creative cycle, that started with a seed, is now brought into its full completion having moved through the phases of growth, harvest & composting in the cycle.
For a few days we reside in/as absolute silence (utterly unqualified) before the rebirthing (or emergence) of the new creative cycle— at Spring, with the rising Sun on the Eastern horizon.
At this moment of the dawn of time, with the Sun turning over the horizon the prevailing quality is that of the Sattva Guna (Sanskrit). Silent truth, is now qualified with the qualities of light, knowing & pure mind— with the utterance of the creative word/sound/breath. This direction, therefore has appropriate correspondences, associated with deities, elements & powers etc. depending on the culture & context.
The dark Goddess is the prior silent/still, but knowing— primordial space/cauldron/womb within which the primordial cosmic soup swirls, undulates & stirs within itself as a vortex or spiral— as described in the creation story of the Rg Veda.
At the auspicious moment, the components are just right, so that the Sun (Son of the Goddess) or Sattvic light; is born from the darkness so as to illumine a new creative cycle.
But silent truth, never leaves the circle of creation, or is never separated from it.
Without absolute nothingness (nonbeing) there can’t be somethingness (beingness)— as the creation story of the Rg Veda continues.
The womb/cauldron is the lap & foundation on which all of creation (movement & change) is upheld & unfolds. The lap of Aditi, Isis or Mary.
At the still-point of the wheel, we undergo creative collapse & withdrawal as we merge into silence & stillness (darkness), where time stops, we are in Nirvikalpa samadhi— Self without Will/desire/intention— the deep blue, knowing only our knowing— as in the darkness of deep sleep or dreamless sleep.
We reach this point through the quality of the Tamas Guna (Sanskrit)— that is to withdraw & deconstruct forms into the essential primordial soup— to return a creative cycle to its completion point— where it started as a seed, planted in the darkness; in the ground substance of the Mother womb (the unconscious).
We harvest & reap the fruit of our creative cycle at Autumn, after which we enter rest/reconstitution.
It is the state where the caterpillar slows & collapses into a mush, to be deconstructed & recombined, prior to emergence as butterfly.
As energy/substances are reconstituted (in the cauldron or chrysalis) it eventually reaches a threshold of emergence & overspills— blazing forth as light, or as the Sun, born on the horizon at dawn, at daybreak— this is the waking state of Consciousness.
It is the new Aion, the new cycle, the new turning of the eternal cyclar. Mythical motives of a cracking egg emitting light etc. are images of this.
But, silent truth, ever remains throughout the cycle—as that which is the foundation.
If we stand in silent witnessing— watching the Sun on the horizon passing through its turning seasons, we are in Savikalpa samadhi, we are experiencing creation from the point of view of the Self— with the addition of the quality of divine Will— Self with the intention/desire of the creation unfolding.
In the beginning— God (or sometimes the Gods), said— let there be light.
This is a state of joy & bliss & peace.
We emanate the perfume of love, it is a palpable state of ecstasy & recognition (Sattva/light of consciousness)— the recognition of the unfolding creation as made in the image of the creator (divine Will).
It is in the underworld of deep sleep/dreamless sleep/the unconscious— or incubation that the seeds are planted for the new cycle of creation that will again be harvested & pressed into the cup at Autumn, in the West— where we prepare with festivity for the coming descent & rest period.
Pentagram geometry can be superimposed on the wheel of the year— drawing it within the circle that circumscribes it.
We now have a marriage of a feminine & masculine pattern— Venusian/lunar & solar— signifying a hyper dimensional pattern of non-being & being; or essence without substance or essence expressed through substance.
High geometry (platonic forms) or metaphysical forms & patterns are the higher dimensional intelligences who preside over creation; regulating the mechanism of creation, within time & space.
God (or sometimes the Gods)— said that the human being is made in the image of divinity— where the pentagram is the pattern for the human & the cyclar (the wheel or circle or sphere) is a pattern of the Gods (planets etc.).
The outward movements— on all scales, are reflections of intelligent interiority; or innate intelligence, & organising principles; operating within all form.
